Shopify Site Setup for UniqueCherie

Unique Cherie

When an opportunity to help an artisan jewelry maker set up a new website came to me, I jumped at it. First of all, how fun to work with some beautiful images of amazing one-of-a-kind jewelry? Second, to delve into Shopify and learn how it works. I was familiar with Shopify but had never spent any time working in it specifically.

Cherie, of Unique Cherie artisan jewelry, was looking to move her current Etsy shop to Shopify so that she had more control over the site and sales of her products. She wanted help doing the initial setup, and then to be able to maintain the site on her own. I LOVE to help business owners be able to control their own website! For some business owners, being able to update their site and add products on their own is best. But a little help getting started is necessary, and of course, I am always ready to lend a hand in the future.

Cherie and I are in opposite ends of the US – she is in Florida, I am in Wisconsin, but working together went smoothly. We communicated mostly through Facebook Messenger in this instance. She sent me a document outlining all her goals, I asked a few questions, and we settled on a plan.

Setting up the Shopify site was such an easy process! Shopify has an amazing library of how-tos which I found incredible and better than other sites like Wix or WordPress. Setup went quickly and then I started to dig around to learn how it worked.

Picking out the right theme was interesting for me. Shopify has themes (themes are built out “designs” which you can customize as you want) much like WordPress, but they seem to be more extensive (and expensive). Cherie and I worked together to identify what she needed for her theme. Due to the expense of the premium themes on Shopify, we wanted to be very thorough in our research to ensure all needs were met. Cherie picked out a great theme which wound up being so perfect for her custom jewelry!

Theme setup is really the most complex part of the project and takes quite a bit of research to sort out how to get everything in place the way we wanted it. Especially because I had never used it before. Once I got it nailed down, I then worked with Cherie to improve the design and get it just like she wanted.

Along with the theme setup came setting up the product categories she needed, laying out her homepage, setting up a couple starter product pages for her, pointing her URL to Shopify, and then last, putting together a PDF with information on how to use Shopify for future use.

It is so satisfying to see how Cherie has since been able to use Shopify successfully on her own – adding products, pages, copy, images and everything.

Working with Cherie was lots of fun and I enjoyed the highly collaborative process. She was very clear on what she wanted and the look & feel of her site, which made things easy. Plus, I enjoyed getting an up close view of the jewelry which is AMAZING. I advise checking out her site for the shopping alone! There are some great gift ideas, and Christmas is never too far away. Check out UniqueCherie and see how well she built out her site.

BrixStone Farms Website Launch

BrixStone Farms Logo

BrixStone Farms is an established orchard located in northern lower Michigan that was recently bought by a new owner, Keaton Foster. Keaton was looking to bring BrixStone Farms into the future and first thing he needed to do was launch a website. I was happy to help!

We communicated primarily over email as Keaton is located in Michigan and I’m in Wisconsin – this was not a concern as it is so easy to communicate with anybody across the country (or world) nowadays! There are so many tools like email, video chat and the plain old phone or email. After some initial consultation, we outlined the handful of pages needed for BrixStone’s website, and settled on a timeline.

Our process looked something like this:

  • Consultation and information gathering
    • This is where we discussed what Keaton’s vision was, gathered copy, and I researched other similar websites
  • Install WordPress
  • Set up SSL (secure server)
  • Point domains
  • Select design/theme/layout
  • Ensure mobile-friendly
  • Set up pages
  • Search engine optimize all copy and images
  • Review
  • Install site map – last step and the “Go Live” for this particular project
    • This was saved for last, as the site was techincally “live” from the initial install of WordPress, unlike other existing sites. We wanted to ensure the site was 100% SEO ready before submitting the site map

After locking down the domains needed, I set up WordPress on the main domain, and pointed the others to that domain and set about installation. From there, I gathered a number of themes/designs/layouts in WordPress to try to identify the final design. After a bit of back and forth, we landed on one that worked perfect for BrixStone. If you are curious, we utilized the Avada Theme from ThemeForest which is nearly 100% customizable and I love to use!

The logo and photography was provided by Keaton, and I set about importing and setting up the pages. Most important with this initial website launch was to ensure all the pages and images were SEO friendly. We were very careful with all of the copy and images to ensure top SEO quality. Another important factor was to ensure the site was mobile friendly, and of course, secure. One of the best parts about WordPress is that these two items are easily addrssed and implemented!

We had some back and forth with copy edits and images, all of which are easy to implement and address with WordPress. In the end it took about 2 weeks to get the site set up and approved by all. Last step on this project was to submit the site map to Google Analytics to ensure we had everything nailed down before too much search engine activity began. We also, at this point, submitted BrixStone location to both Google and Bing maps, which is important for local search traffic.

I’m happy to say BrixStone Farms website is popping up #1 or #2 on applicable searches, and the site looks amazing! Keaton was great to work with.

Recommendation from Keaton:
Working with Melissa was a pleasure, we built our full site in only a few short weeks. Throughout the buildout Melissa was very responsive and informative when dealing with my questions and concerns. Together, we were able to create a beautiful site that conveyed wonderful experiences. I would suggest Melissa to anyone looking to build a site from scratch or revamp an existing platform, she is proficient in web marketing and SEO optimization. 10/10! ” – Keaton Foster, Owner BrixStone Farms

Jodi’s Fitness Website Redesign & Branding

Jodi's Fitness Logo

Some recent work I have done is for Jodi’s Fitness. Jodi’s Fitness is an established Personal Trainer business in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Check out her new updated site here! Having set up her website initially on her own in 2015, Jodi decided it was time to give it an update. We got together to go over what sort of ideas she had and came away excited and ready to bring her site up to date!

I was looking forward to the challenge, because Jodi’s site was built using Wix, which I had no experience using for site development. I was grateful she was open to me learning while helping her. Wix turned out to be a very impressive tool. Having previously only used home-grown CMSs or WordPress, it was really exciting to see how slick Wix was for website building. I love having this in my toolbox for future clients.

Quote from Jodi on our experience working together:
“Working with Melissa on this project was stress free and easy. From our first meeting, Melissa asked questions that made me feel like you were in the process of “understanding” me and my business. Running a Personal Training business; “I” am my brand name and business. I am actually the product and you understood that.”

Jodi and I decided on a theme, colors, discussed updating her logo, nailed down the pages we needed, scheduled a photo shoot and discussed the SEO value of her site. Her site is highly ranked in her key search terms so we did not want to damage that.

Jodi’s Fitness successfully launched with a fresh, updated design, new logo and stunning photography. See some examples of the before & after below.

The bee in the new logo was a new element Jodi felt strongly about, so we incorporated it into the logo and within the site.

Updating websites is always a fun project to add to recent work portfolio. This one was especially fun because it was almost an entire site launch, as we added several pages and introduced an entirely new look for the whole website. We also utilized Wix’s new builder application. Working with Jodi was great fun and she caught on how to utilize the new interface quickly after just a little bit of guidance. I feel it is always important to ensure the site owner feels comfortable updating their site if they want. I am always here to help in the future, but being empowered to do so is vital for many business owners.

Quote from Jodi on our experience working together:
“As the plan unfolded and as the website was created, Melissa always listened to the small things that I wanted tweaked and she let me have say in the process. The fact that my ego was allowed to participate in my website helped to keep me at ease during the process. Melissa never wavered and never showed frustration through the entire process. I would not hesitate to recommend Melissa to any of my friends and business acquaintances.”

We also did a photo shoot indoors and outdoors to utilize on the website. Some of the images turned out so amazing! It was fun to do and also a good refresher for me as I had not done too much “real” photography since my college years. Take a look at a few:
