Meta Description Overview

Meta Descriptions are a vital area for your website pages. What is a Meta Description? It is what summarizes the content of every single website webpage. This tells search engines like Google and Bing what your webpage is about and is utilized in Social Media posting. Each page of your site should have its own Meta Description.

This area is invaluable for getting potential customers to click-through to your webpage! And the more click-throughs you get, the higher your site will rank with search engines.

Here is an example of what the Meta Description is when you see a site show up in a Google Search Results Page (SERP). Notice how the Title and Meta Description work together like a headline and sub-head:

Quick Tips for Meta Descriptions

Here are my quick tips for writing the perfect Meta Description:

  1. Length Matters: Keep it to 100-150 characters. Front load the most important at the first in the case of truncating!
  2. Include target keyword(s)
  3. Focus on benefits and why your webpage is unique
  4. Include a call-to-action and entice readers to click through as this is your ultimate goal
  5. Avoid exact duplication of body content of page
  6. Avoid special or non-numeric characters

Important Note Regarding Google Rewriting Meta Descriptions:

According to a recent study (and my own research), Google rewrites Meta Descriptions over 60% of the time. Yikes. From what I have seen, often Google will keep the first 10 or so words, and then pick up from other areas on the page for what they think is appropriate to the search. This is certainly annoying when one has spent so much time writing the exact right description for their page! But, it is still important to do so. Meta Descriptions ALSO get picked up on Social Media and other “sharing” options, so never fear: your hard work will still shine!
